No, your neobank's card reader will not take Bancontact. Revolut, N26, bunq and Wise stop at Visa and Mastercard, while the Belgian domestic scheme carries most card payments in shops here. To take payments properly in Belgium, you need a third-party acquirer or a QR code. Here is how I choose between them.
Your neobank's card reader stops at Visa and Mastercard
Revolut's Belgian help page is explicit: its card reader accepts Mastercard and Visa cards, plus Google Pay, Apple Pay and Samsung Pay. Bancontact is not on the list. The same holds for the Terminal range that replaces it, and Revolut Readers are no longer sold (page checked on 19 September 2026).
With N26 Business, bunq and Wise Business the question does not even arise: none of them sells a card acceptance product. Qonto offers a reader in some markets, but I found no mention of Bancontact in its Belgian documentation, so I will not claim it does.
I ran into the problem at a flea market in Ghent, one Sunday in May. Reader in hand, three customers in a row held out a plain Bancontact card, the kind with neither Maestro nor Visa Debit on the back. Declined, declined, declined. The Bancontact gap is not a forgotten setting: the scheme is domestic, it carries roughly 85 % of in-store card payments according to Febelfin, the Belgian banking federation, and neobanks licensed elsewhere in Europe do not connect to it.
Which solutions really accept Bancontact?
Three families, no more: independent acquirers (SumUp, myPOS), terminals sold or rented by Belgian banks and their partners (Worldline, CCV), and the Bancontact Pro app, which swaps the device for a QR code.
Here are the entry-level conditions recorded on 19 September 2026 from the official price pages. They move fast, so check again before ordering.
| Solution (entry offer) | Bancontact | Subscription | Bancontact fee | Hardware |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SumUp | Yes | €0 | 1.69 % | Reader to buy |
| myPOS, One plan | Yes | €0/month | 1.49 % | Terminal to buy |
| myPOS, Pro plan | Yes | €39/month | €0.12 per transaction | Terminal to buy |
| Bancontact Pro (QR code) | Yes | €18/year per account | €0.06 per transaction | None, smartphone |
| Belgian bank terminal (Worldline, CCV) | Yes | Rental commonly €20 to €60/month | Per contract | Provided |
| Revolut Terminal | No | Business account from €10/month | Not applicable | Terminal to buy |
One row deserves underlining, the last one: that "No" cannot be worked around with Apple Pay or with a Belgian IBAN. Apple Pay and Google Pay simply carry the underlying Visa or Mastercard, and the Belgian IBAN Revolut has issued since 2025 creates no Bancontact function, because the scheme sits on the card rather than on the account.

What does a €40 Bancontact payment actually cost?
Between €0.06 and €0.68, an elevenfold spread depending on the solution. On a €40 basket, SumUp takes €0.68, the myPOS One plan €0.60, the Pro plan €0.12 and the Bancontact Pro app €0.06.
The gap only becomes obvious on a yearly basis. Take a self-employed professional collecting 150 Bancontact payments of €40 a month, €72,000 over the year, and compare the full cost with the subscription included.
| Solution | Yearly fees | Yearly subscription | Total over one year |
|---|---|---|---|
| SumUp (1.69 %) | €1,216.80 | €0 | €1,216.80 |
| myPOS One (1.49 %) | €1,072.80 | €0 | €1,072.80 |
| myPOS Plus (0.99 %) | €712.80 | €228 | €940.80 |
| myPOS Pro (€0.12 per transaction) | €216 | €468 | €684 |
| Bancontact Pro (€0.06 per transaction) | €108 | €18 | €126 |

A thousand euros a year apart. For the same turnover. A percentage fee suits small volumes and punishes large ones severely, while a flat per-transaction fee does the exact opposite: above roughly €3,000 taken per month, a subscription plan is almost always cheaper, on the strict condition that you keep hitting the volume month after month.
The Bancontact Pro QR code, €18 a year and €0.06 a payment
Cheaper than everything else, and no hardware. The customer scans a code shown on your screen or printed at the counter, confirms in their banking app, and the payment lands.
The limit is blunt: the customer needs the app. A regular will pull it out without thinking; a passing tourist or a 78-year-old customer will reach for a card instead. The QR code complements a reader, it does not replace one.
Do you need an account with a Belgian bank to take payments?
Not necessarily, which is good news when the business account is a neobank. SumUp and myPOS open a merchant account in their own name, collect on your behalf, then pay the funds out, which makes the IBAN prefix largely irrelevant. With myPOS, settlement is even instant into a built-in account, with a card to spend from directly.
Belgian bank offers work differently: the terminal comes packaged with a business current account held with them. Keeping Revolut Business as your main account and taking only the terminal does not fit their standard bundles.
Then there is the legal duty, which many self-employed people discover late. Since 1 July 2022, every business dealing with consumers must offer at least one electronic payment method alongside cash. Liberal professions are covered, a physiotherapist as much as a plumber, and the SPF Économie, the Belgian federal public service for the economy, collects reports from consumers who were refused one. The text imposes no technology: an instant transfer, a QR code or a terminal all qualify.

Where does the money sit between payment and payout?
With an electronic money institution, most of the time, and that is worth knowing before signing. myPOS Ltd is authorised and supervised in Ireland by the Central Bank of Ireland under licence number C475122: funds are safeguarded in segregated accounts, and they do not fall under a €100,000 deposit guarantee.
Safeguarding shields your money from the provider's creditors in an insolvency, but the repayment mechanics and the time it takes to get your cash back are not those of a licensed bank. My own rule: I never leave more than a few days of takings in a merchant account, and the rest goes to the main account on Monday morning. The exact status takes two minutes to check in the registers of the FSMA, the Belgian financial markets authority, and of the National Bank of Belgium, or with whichever regulator issued the licence.
Six checks before ordering a card reader
- Does the word "Bancontact" appear in black and white in the list of accepted methods, rather than a vague "debit cards"?
- What is the specific Bancontact rate? It is almost always different from the rate on international cards and American Express.
- Does the contract tie you in, and for how many months? Bank rentals often run for 36 to 48 months.
- How quickly do funds arrive: same day, next business day, or at the end of the week?
- Does the payout account accept a foreign IBAN if your business account is licensed in Lithuania, Germany or the Netherlands?
- What is the provider's status: licensed bank, payment institution or electronic money institution?
A colleague learned the third line the hard way. He had signed a 48-month rental for a fixed terminal, and his business went mobile within a year. No way out without paying a penalty.
In short
No neobank operating in Belgium takes Bancontact, neither through its card nor through its terminal, and that wall cannot be worked around. For a self-employed professional whose business account is a Revolut Business, an N26 Business or a bunq, the answer runs through a third party: SumUp to start with no subscription and no commitment, myPOS once volume passes a few thousand euros a month, the Bancontact Pro app for trades where customers reach for a phone sooner than a card. Check the provider's status before trusting it with your cash, and keep the duty to accept at least one electronic payment method in mind.
